President Salva Kiir has restated his position to form a revitalized government of national unity (RTGoNU) which was to take its place on November 12, 2019.
He said all other signatories to the peace agreement, except SPLM-IO, are opposed to the formation of the government as scheduled. Kiir was addressing national parliamentarians at the opening of the second session in Juba on Tuesday under the theme ‘Moving forward in the spirit of Peace, Unity, and Nation-building’.
South Sudan government has carried on with the plan to form the RTGoNU with South Sudan Opposition Alliance(SSOA), the Former Detainees(FDS) and the other political parties. The parties are willing to form the government of national unity on 12 November despite the absence of the SPLA-IO party.
Furthermore, Mr. Kiir has consistently reiterated his position to ensure that the unity government goes as planned on the agreement of the 12 November 2019. Mr. Kiir in the past few days has been repeating all over the same message of his position on the formation of RTGoNU at different national functions and ignoring calls by the opposition SPLM-IO and National Democratic Movement to extend the pre-transitional period to allow the implementation of key pending tasks.
Mr. Machar the leader of the SPLM-IO has stated before in the past few days that until security arrangements are implemented and parties reach an agreement on the number of states and their boundaries, they will not be part of such government.
The opposition parties SPLM-IO and National Democratic Movement demanded the creation of unified forces, deployment of soldiers that were meant to protect top government officials among others.
